MEET THE SPRITES: REN ALEX-ROSE

We speak to Ren about life at Firesprite as a Writer

Person smiling at camera for portrait photo to discuss games industry topics, their game development career and their role in video games at Firesprite.

Hi Ren, thank you for joining us today! Tell us, what does a typical day look like for a Writer?
We tend to split our time between group Writers’ Rooms, where the narrative team gets together to discuss and mind map various ideas from characters to plot to reviewing scripts, to individual tasks. This may include individual mind mapping, putting together documents and pitches, or writing the scripts themselves! Whatever we do, it is always in great collaboration!

What would you say has been your biggest accomplishment since joining Firesprite?
Really just seeing how far my project’s narrative has come since I first started in January has been incredible. We’re on track to telling an awesome story, and I’m proud and excited to be amongst my team as we continue through the process! In particular, seeing some of our characters be cast and watching the actors work in mocap was such an accomplishment to us all.

Tell us something about yourself that we might not already know!
Those who are in meetings with me may have seen my little dog, Luke, around, but I also have a pet leopard gecko and ball python! If I hadn’t gone into a creative career, I would have chosen to work with animals. I even spent about six months working at the zoo at one point!

Who is your biggest inspiration at Firesprite?
Definitely the others on the narrative team! I’m surrounded by a lot of talented folks, and all their hard work and creativity keeps me motivated and honoured to be amongst them.

What is the most rewarding thing about being a Writer?
Writing, like all aspects of game dev, is real difficult. But at the end of the day, actually having a finished product out in the world is an incredible feeling. For me, what makes the hard work worth it is seeing the audience fall in love with the characters and story as much as I have – fan art, plot discussions, “who’s your favourite character” polls, or even a simple good review. If there is just one person who is in some way moved by my work, it is the greatest reward.
